Census Returns

Census Returns

I have added a page with census return transcriptions for The Rank; you can find a link to it on the site menu.

Despite having worked with census records for a while, this was my first time actually transcribing the data in them (not to mention publishing it! A lesson in WordPress widgets…).

It was a really interesting exercise, and led to a much greater appreciation for the documents as a source of information about change over time. Once I had begun to understand the route that each enumerator had taken to collect the data, I could roughly identify the same house in each set of records. Soon enough, patterns of movement between houses began to emerge.

I’ll be writing up some of these findings shortly, and finishing off the transcription of 1891, followed by 1841, 1851 and 1861 in due course!
